Music Video Monday: YouTube changes and Rockabilly Covers

Normally putting this weekly post together is a pretty easy affair because we could easily select “Most Viewed videos” in the Music category for the past day / week / month when I logged into my YouTube account. No more. The past few weeks have seen YouTube undergo further transformations of its Music category user interface with users now been displayed music videos by genre, rather than by ranking in terms of views / comments. It’s a change which will probably impact the average YouTube user less than it does me, given that the browse function in YouTube is outweighed by use of the search bar or Google search, but I have to say I’m finding it quite annoying!! The Music category is the only one affected by these changes which leads me to think these changes might be a stepping stone to the Vevo changeover we’ve blogged about before.

Sometimes we in the English speaking world can miss out on genuine phenomena from non-English countries. Here is one to have a look at. Proving that you can get a lot of mileage from some craftily chosen cover versions, stock footage and some very Brylcreemed hair, these are The Baseballs. Hailing from Berlin and having taken northern Europe by storm, the band will be touring the UK in the autumn. Check out the video for their cover version of Rhianna’s Umbrella which has a not-insignificant 10 million views.
